Are you curious?

The Stadium of Domitian was erected in 86 AD.
It is the only example of a masonry stadium erected on masonry foundations known until now outside of Greece and the eastern world.
It was usual among the emperors, to ingratiate themselves with the people, to organise games or to institute new ones and Domitian instituted the Certamen Capitolino Iovi, equestrian and gymnastic musical tournament to be disputed every four years.
In the stadium was held the gymnastic part (certamen gymnicum). The competitions were attended by professional athletes and this participation was considered important to the point that were found inscriptions on tombs reminiscent of a victory achieved in the Agone Capitolino.

Piazza Navona is the outstanding example of the topographical survival of the Stadium. The houses built only above the remains of the stadium have preserved its ancient shape, leaving free from buildings all the area of the racetrack transformed into a monumental square.

Remains of the stadium are also present in many of the cellars of private houses overlooking Piazza Navona, under Palazzo Pamphilj, in the basement of the Church of St. Agnes and the École Française de Rome.
